About
Jamal K. Rivera is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than fifteen years of experience in community mental health, substance use treatment, and integrated behavioral health settings. He holds advanced supervisory credentials through the NASW and is endorsed in infant and early childhood mental health. His clinical work has centered on serving historically under-resourced populations, addressing co-occurring disorders, and supporting clients navigating systemic barriers to care.
As a supervisor, Jamal brings a grounded, pragmatic style that emphasizes clinical competence, ethical responsibility, and self-awareness. He is particularly skilled at helping interns translate theory into practice, manage complex cases, and build confidence in fast-paced or high-acuity environments. Supervision sessions often focus on clinical decision-making, documentation standards, boundary-setting, and strategies for preventing burnout.
Jamal’s approach to supervision is trauma-informed and strengths-based. He encourages reflective dialogue around countertransference, professional identity development, and the realities of clinical work within larger systems. His supervision framework integrates Motivational Interviewing, DBT-informed strategies, and harm reduction principles, with flexibility to meet interns where they are in their training.
Jamal is committed to mentoring emerging clinicians who are interested in community mental health, social justice–informed practice, and work with individuals impacted by substance use and intersectional trauma. He views supervision as both a teaching and advocacy role, supporting interns in becoming ethical, effective clinicians and informed participants in the behavioral health workforce.
